Breast Implants – What kind of breast implant should I choose?
After a thorough consultation with one of our nurses, during this we will discuss which implants will suit you, based on your own needs. All implants are made of what is known commonly as silicone. The breast implants can be filled with salt water(saline), silicone or both. This can come as a liquid or gel which will give a different feel to the breast. Cohesive silicone implants are firmer but come in more shapes than liquid or gel which give a softer feel. Which one to use for you will be discussed and agreed before any procedure takes place.
There are many different implant procedures that now take place and all are governed by the Medicines and Healthcare products regulatory Agency (MHRA). They are responsible for ensuring the safety of all implantable medical devices, which of course will include breast implants. There have been numerous studies carried out on silicone and how it is used in breast implants and there is no evidence that it is not safe or that women who have silicone breast implants are at a higher risk of getting diseases such as cancer and arthritis. Your operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes about an hour and a half.
